The United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps (USNSCC), also known as Sea Cadets, is a nationally recognized youth leadership and maritime training program focused on leadership, citizenship, teamwork, and hands-on learning.
Great Lakes Division (GLD) is a local Sea Cadets unit serving families in the Detroit Metro Area. What sets our division apart is the opportunity for cadets to train aboard a real ship, participate in hands-on ship operations, pursue PADI scuba certification, and take part in underwater research and photography on the Great Lakes. These real-world experiences allow cadets to develop leadership, responsibility, and practical skills rarely found in other youth programs.
Great Lakes Division welcomes youth ages 10–18, with age-appropriate training that grows with cadets as they gain experience and responsibility.
No. While cadets wear uniforms and learn discipline and respect for leadership, Sea Cadets is a youth development program—not military training. There is no obligation to join the military.
The unit typically meets on the 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month, with occasional additional activities, events, or optional training opportunities during school breaks. You always can check our Life At GLD page to see upcoming events.

No. Cadets do not need to be physically advanced or athletic to join. Physical training is part of the program, but it is age-appropriate and progressive. Fitness standards are introduced gradually, and cadets are trained over time to improve strength, endurance, and confidence at their own pace. The focus is on personal growth, healthy habits, and effort — not competition or prior ability.
Yes. In partnership with the Noble Odyssey Foundation, interested cadets may take part in a supervised SCUBA diving program and work toward PADI certification, a widely recognized scuba credential used around the world.
Overall, Sea Cadets is a government-sponsored national youth program. While it is not fully funded, we work hard to keep costs affordable for families. The primary expenses include:
As a nonprofit, federally supported program, our goal is to provide high-quality training and unique opportunities while keeping participation as accessible as possible.
Yes. Parents are encouraged to stay involved and informed, and volunteer opportunities may be available depending on interest, skills, and background check requirements. But it is not required.
